Mrs. Augusta Gayes Ballard Farmhouse
This house was last owned by Mrs. Augusta Gaye, a long-time local Ballard business woman. From our best records, the house is thought to have been built in 1904, and it has been left pretty much in original architectural condition. It could be classified as a Victorian Farmhouse.
The painted board hanging in front of the front door is actually Mrs. Gayes real estate sign. She did business out of the house for at least 40 or 50 years from what I can ascertain Several people from the neighborhood have called me an told me how much they love the house, and one person in particular, a man who is probably in his fifties, told me that his father would always take him by the house to Say hello to Mrs. Gaye whenever they were nearby. He described the house as having felt old fashioned even back then!
The wonderful news is that the house will, in fact, gain a new life by being moved two blocks away, from its current address at 5912 14th Avenue NW to its new address a 918 60th Avenue NW. Mark Houston and partners will be placing the house on a new daylight basement and restoring it to its original glory!
Please consider coming out to watch it move in the wee hours of Saturday morning (after Friday night) on June 22nd, 2002. The move will begin at 5:00 am, and may go quickly and smoothly based on current factors (estimated at 2-4 hours). There will be many people from the Ballard neighborhood and beyond out to watch!
